Founded in the 13th century, all throughout history Berlin has been a city of importance for the controllers of the city. It once was the capital of ‘the march of Brandenburg’, the capital of the kingdom of Prussia and finally in 1871 the capital of the German empire.
The city suffered a lot during numerous wars through the years, such as the first and second world war. Big parts of Berlin were destroyed by bombings of the English and American forces. Also in ground combat lots of buildings were destroyed. After WWII ended due to big differences between the soviet rulers and the western rulers a wall was build to separate the city. Until 1990 the two parts were divided but after the wall was taken down, the city Berlin was whole again and flourished as never before.
Berlin is one of the most common cities in Germany to study in. There are approximately 150.000 students studying in Berlin in a great variety of professions. The names of these universities are Freie Universität the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, and the Technische Universität Berlin.
Shopping in Berlin
If you are a ‘shopaholic’ you can go crazy in Berlin. Here you can shop till you drop.
The Kurfürstendamm and Tauentzienstraße are very well known streets, which have department stores of all the big brands in the industry.
There are also many expensive and luxurious shops like Jil Sanders and Yves Saint Laurent. This area even has its own website.

Friedrichstraße

Wilmersdorfer Straße
Here you are sure to find satisfaction if you’re addicted to shopping. This boulevard contains a lot of shops and department stores. All kind of different shops are located next to each other. Offering you shopping pleasure for hours there are many more shopping streets but the best thing to do is to find out for yourself strolling down the streets with your classmates or colleague you met during your study or internship in Berlin.
Parks and sights in Berlin
A big city such as Berlin has numerous parks and gardens to rest during your break, or after school or work. The Volkspark Friedrichshain is located in the east of Berlin, this park is perfect for a quite walk or just going to eat your lunch in. Furthermore, this park has a fantastic open-air stage for theatre, a large public swimming pool and a sand filled area to play volleyball.
Another beautiful park is located in the district of Wedding. Volkspark Humboldthain has a valley and the main activity here is walking. There are picnic grounds and a big outdoor public swimming pool. What makes this park interesting are the remains of a large World War II bunker on the northern edge. It is a very fun experience to walk through the park and discover the beautiful vegetation and WWII remains.
The Botanical Gardens are really worth paying a visit. There are about 18.000 different plants here under the. On the 42 hectare site there is a fantastic greenhouse which is the house of numerous tropical plants. Another feature the parks offer is a musical programme, every Friday during the summer months various artists display their music for those who are interested.
